The Hound of the Highlands: West Highland White Terrier

Around 1700, the Isle of Skye and the Highlands of Scotland were already producing lots of small terriers. Breeds of Scotland were separated into two terriers Skye and Dandie Dinmont Terriers.

The Dandie Dinmont was considered a distinct breed. The Skyes included the Scotties, Cairns and West Highland White Terrier or Westie.

It was also noted that these terriers were the hybrids among the crossed Cairns, Scottish terriers and elegant. Assuming that the hybrid could be really loyal and its hunting instincts can not be minimized. In fact, many royalties in Scotland owned terriers that were very similar to the Westies of today.

Another story interesting is about a Westie that stopped a mother constantly yells at his daughter. Provided the mother shouted to her teenage daughter, the Westie would attack the mother. The dog attack has worsened over the years leading up to the total incapacity of the mother to scold her teenager.

It turned out that the girl was really gratifying dog for protection by calming him down after every threat "of his mother. Many people believe that the girl was able to help her mother to change their habits, when in fact she herself was to help reward the dog for his behavior.

• The chronic skin
• Perth's disease (hip problems)

• Cranio mandibular osteopathy (lion jaw)
• dislocated kneecap, a condition of the patella
• disease Liver
• Deafness
• Congenital Heart Disease

Care and Exercise:

• Your hair should be brushed regularly bristle brush.
• You should bathe only when necessary.
• The overall shield must be stripped at least twice a year and trimmed every four months.
• The skin on the eyes and ears should be cut with Blunt-nose mirrors.
• They will surely be more agile and healthy after of regular sessions of play and / or walking.

Source / History:

As noted above, which share the same lineage with Cairns and Scotties (from Skye terriers), and even chickens. This trio has developed in the Isle of Skye, which was one of the Highlands of Scotland.
