What side of the street or road shall be an individual (with dog) walk?

Usually on foot is very low (4 pounds) my dog near left side, and I like to walk on the left side of a road so that if a driver goes, my dog is safe in my body and the left side of the road, because I fear of a cyclist hit the dog. Someone told me recently that the custom is to walk on the right side. I live in Maryland; anyone know if it exists, or if there is a rule?

I strap on my right hand and walk in a covered area, maintaining a very short leash. If you are in Maryland, you can proceed to the left traffic when there is no sidewalk? Probably a good idea to walk a dog too, but I am curious and there is no traffic, not much here although the country is worse. Good luck to you and your dog.
