Your Puppy: Have fun while fixing the factor of "Rage"

Author: Marc Goldberg, CDT

I sat trapped on the plane trip to Orlando, strapped into the seat, 30,000 feet above the ground. I say "trapped" by my seat, my entire row, even, was beaten constantly agitated and threw a pair of blond, angelic looking little monsters in the row ahead of me.

Michael, twelve, and her brother, aged eight, found relief from the boredom the only way they knew … for fighting the fight and all the annoying to the three rows of seats in all directions.

At first, I was also irritated by the little blond idiots. But like his father, he out of his head to threaten children with the injury, I began to smile. I almost laughed in reality. Not that the boys finally get a Stern talking. But because to the image that came to me.

Suddenly, the children remember a couple of blond golden retriever puppies, happy, noisy … and completely out of control. Michael and David, without any sense of their parents, the default behavior known on this flight. That "broke in from the ground."

Dad yelled at the children in the tone of the young, well educated wrath of parents use when they really want to do is yell at their children up for Walmart. And frightened them. Most coaches are grateful. But the good effects The shouting match was too temporary. My head began to rock and roll again. The cubs, I mean that children return to standard male delinquent behavior.

Then mom intervened. She came bearing gifts. Gradually, she told that their options include certain death of his father's hands … or could make the gaming business in the basket that had beaten knees. Gone.

The boys broke into the bag, like puppies in a Kong stuffed Golden foie gras. Bags of pretzels, disposable cameras, coloring books and playing cards emerged from this cornucopia of childhood treats like a geyser Old Faithful.

It was a good thing.

Remember, they were still children.

"Son - you're almost there?"

"How many minutes is a lot more?

Questions and protest yet had the opportunity to be kids, well, boys. But the worst of the chaos is complete.

I have this strange tendency see dog training as a metaphor for life itself. N bit how human behavior is beyond some direct correlation to the dogs in my opinion. Then I thought of Michael and David, and I remembered why so many puppies. Then it hit me.

Dad came and told them what not to do. And it did not work for more than a few minutes. Mom had a better idea. It showed the children a new behavior that could be done through the presentation of simultaneously with an unintended consequence could choose the new behavior and the reward that has created for them.

The parallels to our lives when tries to help dogs and puppies to stop an unwanted behavior. It is effective to teach a dog a new behavior that is incompatible with its unwanted behavior. It is less effective than correction of a dog to do wrong.

Take jump on people. You can simply correct. But the temptation remains being. Plus, get with the 21st century already. We have dogs for "warm Fuzzies." We are increasingly less likely to return the dog when the dog only wants us welcome. So instead of fighting dogs, why not teach him to sit and give paw for attention? He can not do that and now he can go? It is also a thing to deliver is likely to gain much notice by the dog, and thus becomes self-fulfilling.

Dick Russell, professional dog trainer in Louisiana, said he teaches the same "sit and give paw" routine guard dogs space. A dog does not usually sit and shake and Watchkeeping from space to a child at a time. I stare at this problem differently. Using a light touch with the leash and collar, teach the dog to move and abandon all beings want human in space. Anyway, the dog has learned to do the same as what not to do.

As for Michael and David, who plays with their new toys for a while. I eyeball periodically, however, until the old behavior to reassert themselves. I smiled thinking about the dog training equipment located in checked baggage. If only I could have children, they could all retire to my private island, where dogs can run free and children behave.
